Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) in Oregon

COVID-19 Guidance: Visit our Healthcare Partner Resources page. Guidance for long-term care facilities is posted in the Healthcare Providers and Clinical Laboratories section, under "Clinical and Infection Control Guidance."

Oregon HAI Activities

We work to understand and reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in Oregon. Here are some of the ways we do that:

  • Collect statewide data on reportable HAIs
  • Validate reported data.
  • Consult on outbreaks of transmissible pathogens in healthcare settings.
  • Conduct research projects that help us:
    • Learn how many and what type of HAIs happen in Oregon.
    • Make HAI tracking easier for hospitals.

About HAIs

HAIs are caused by a wide variety of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and are often associated with medical devices.

HAI Reporting

The Oregon Health Authority provides oversight and support for the mandatory reporting of healthcare-associated infections in Oregon hospitals.

HAI Surveillance

We participate in the CDC's Emerging Infections Program (EIP). Through this program, we conduct:

  • Active population-based surveillance for healthcare-associated infections and
  • Broad studies of HAI prevalence and methods to improve HAI surveillance.

HAI Validation

Data validation ensures that the mandatory reporting of HAIs is complete and accurate. State employees independently audit hospital medical records to validate HAIs.
