About Beach Monitoring

The status of monitored beaches along the South coast is based on beach water quality monitoring that occurs between Memorial Day in May and Labor Day in September. Although there may be similar issues occurring at other beaches, advisories are only issued for beaches that are actively being monitored within this sampling window. Limited resources make it difficult to get to all beach locations in any given year, or to monitor for an entire 12 months.

This monitoring data is used for recreational swimming and bathing purposes only. Read about shellfish harvesting below if you plan to harvest shellfish.

*Shellfish Harvesting

The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) jointly issue shellfish safety closures to protect recreational shellfish harvesters from consuming clams or mussels contaminated with harmful biotoxins.
