CPSC, Raymond Geddes Co. Announce Recall of Children’s Necklaces

Sold through: Mail order catalogs nationwide and on the Internet from August 1998 through November 2004 for about $1.

Hazard: The necklaces contain high levels of lead. CPSC regulations ban children's products from containing high levels of lead due to the risk of lead poisoning resulting from contact with these products. The necklaces also contain a sharp point, posing a laceration hazard to young children.

Description: The recalled necklaces have medallions that came in four different designs depicting frogs, dolphins with a small bead on the tail, a sunshine smiley face and an alien face on a starburst. The medallion is on a black rope chain surrounded by a metallic bead with a coil section.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take these necklaces away from young children and contact the company to receive a refund.

CPSC, Meco Corp. Announces Recall of Red Chairs from Children's Furniture Sets

Sold at: Furniture and wholesale club stores nationwide from July 2003 through June 2004 for between $25 and $40. 

Hazard: The red paint on the chair contains excessive lead levels, posing a lead poisoning hazard to young children.

Description: The recalled product is a red folding chair with a metal frame and vinyl padded seat back and base. The chair was sold as a part of a five-piece juvenile table furniture set with a green table, blue chair, yellow chair, green chair and red chair. Only the red chairs with model numbers 11-88-3E1 and 11-88S3E1 and date codes H3, B4, D4 or E4 printed underneath the seat bottom are included in the recall. “Meco” or “Samsonite” brand names are also printed on the seat label.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using this red chair immediately and contact the firm for instructions on returning the red chair and receiving a free replacement chair.

CPSC Announces Recall of Metal Toy Jewelry Sold in Vending Machines

Sold in: Four toy jewelry importers today announced the voluntary recall of 150 million pieces of toy jewelry sold in vending machines across America.

Hazard: CPSC has determined that some of this toy jewelry contains dangerous levels of lead, posing a risk of lead poisoning to children. Only about half of the 150 million pieces of toy jewelry actually contains lead, but, because it is difficult to distinguish the lead jewelry from the non-lead jewelry, the industry decided to recall all pieces.

Description: This toy jewelry recall involves various styles of rings, necklaces and bracelets. The rings are gold- or silver-colored with different designs and paint finishes with various shaped center stones. The necklaces have black cord or rope or gold- or silver-colored chains. The necklaces have pendants, crosses or various geometrical designs or shapes, and can include gemstones. The various styles of bracelets include charm bracelets, bracelets with medallion links, and bracelets with faux stones. All the jewelry was manufactured in India.

Remedy: Consumers should throw away recalled jewelry.

CPSC, Front Porch Classics Announce Recall of "Old Century Dread Pirate®" Coffee Table Games

Sold at: Approximately 170 toy and game stores, on-line and catalog vendors, and gift stores sold the "Dread Pirate®" games from October 2003 through March 2004 for about $100.

Hazard: The surface coating and the metal in the ships contain lead and pose a risk of lead poisoning to young children. A child could ingest lead by swallowing a broken part of the ship or by repeatedly mouthing the ships.

Description: The "Old Century Dread Pirate®" coffee table game has many playing pieces illustrating pirates, ships, coins, and treasure. This recall covers all games with lot numbers 75, 79, and 81. The lot numbers are on the bottom of the "treasure chest."

Remedy: Take the recalled "Dread Pirate®" ships away from children immediately and call Front Porch for free replacement toy ships that do not contain lead and will not break.

Sold at: Vending machines in malls, discount department and grocery stores nationwide from December 2002 through August 2003 for about 25 cents.

Hazard: The rings contain high levels of lead, posing a risk of lead poisoning to young children.

Description: The metal rings are silver in color with shapes including hearts and stars, with slashes of colored paint.

Remedy: Consumers should throw the ring away or contact the company for more information.

Kindermusik International Announces Recall of "Lily Pad Clacker" Instruments

Sold by: Do-Re-Me & You! consultants in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Texas from October 2003 through December 2003 for about $30 for the music kit.

Hazard: The green coating on the Lily Pad Clacker instruments contain high levels of lead, posing a risk of poisoning to young children.

Description: The Lily Pad Clackers are wooden rhythm instruments designed for use with the Frog Went A-Dancing kit sold by Do-Re-Me & You!, a Kindermusik affiliate. The recalled instrument is 5.25 inches long, and is made of wood. It has two green "lily pads" that are connected to the base by a string. The Clackers were sold as part of a music kit.

Remedy: Return the Lily Pad Clackers to Kindermusik International in the postage paid box provided by the firm. Kindermusik will replace the product with a product of comparable value.
