Asthma Indicator:
Hospitalizations
Measure
: Age-specific hospitalization rates
Data used in the calculation of these measures were collected by the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems for the Hospital Discharge Index (HDI). The HDI provides a central database of all Oregon hospital discharges for public health surveillance and hospital policy analysis. Information on emergency room visits, urgent care, outpatient surgery and clinic visits is not included in this database.
Tracking asthma hospitalizations will let Oregon EPHT
look more closely at the relationship between asthma and indoor and outdoor pollutants by
examining trends, geographic or demographic differences, and targeting interventions to those most in need of care.
EPHT can also assist in
monitoring the burden of asthma, asthma trends and how asthma affects the quality of life.
Asthma hospitalization rates for specific age groups are presented below. Asthma hospitalizations were most frequent in children under the age of 5 with an average annual hospitalization rate of 13 per 10,000 as well as in adults aged 65 and older with an average rate of 15 per 10,000. Asthma hospitalizations were rarest in people between the ages of 5 and 34 with average annual rates of 3 to 5 per 10,000.
The Healthy People 2010 initiative has set target asthma hospitalization rates for three age groups. For children under 5 and and adults under 64, Oregon has consistently met these targets. For adults aged 65 and older, Oregon has met the Healthy People 2010 target for three of the last seven years of data.
Individual counties show the same overall pattern as the state with the highest rates for the youngest and oldest age groups. Not all counties, however, meet the Healthy People 2010 goals, as their age-specific rates exceed the targets. In some cases, these rate estimates may not be reliable. Yet certain counties, such as Harney or Douglas, show rates that are reliably above the rate for the entire state and the Healthy People 2010 target rates.
