Asthma Indicator:
Hospitalizations
Measure
: Annual number of hospitalizations
Data used in the calculation of these measures were collected by the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems for the Hospital Discharge Index (HDI). The HDI provides a central database of all Oregon hospital discharges for public health surveillance and hospital policy analysis. Information on emergency room visits, urgent care, outpatient surgery and clinic visits is not included in this database.
Tracking asthma hospitalizations will let Oregon EPHT
look more closely at the relationship between asthma and indoor and outdoor pollutants by
examining trends, geographic or demographic differences, and targeting interventions to those most in need of care.
EPHT can also assist in
monitoring the burden of asthma, asthma trends and how asthma affects the quality of life.
The table and graph below show the number of asthma hospitalizations between 2000 and 2006 for Oregon and the 36 Oregon counties. The considerable variation among counties in the number of hospitalizations can largely be explained by their diverse population sizes. Some of the changes over time may also be due to changes in population.
