There is a strong, well-established link between health and learning.

Healthy Kids Learn Better

Healthy Kids Learn Better Partnership (HKLB) works at the state and local level to foster partnerships between health and education stakeholders in order to reduce physical, social and emotional barriers to learning.

Oregon School-Based Health Centers

Oregon's School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) are a unique health care model in which comprehensive physical, mental and preventive health services are provided to youth and adolescents in a school setting.

Oregon School Nurses

2022 School Nursing Pilot Program Legislative Report

In 2019, the legislature passed HB 3165, directing the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to create a new pilot program for school health services. OHA chose to concentrate its pilot on alternative approaches to school nursing services (School Nursing Pilot Program or SNPP), given known gaps in school nursing services in Oregon. This report provides an overview of SNPP as well as a description of activities, sucesses, and lessons learned.

2021 Oregon School Nurse Survey

This report shares findings from the 2021 Oregon School Nurse Survey conducted by the Oregon Health Authority, Adolescent and School Health Unit. Out of approximately 400 registered nurses working in Oregon schools, 251 responded from 29 counties and 81 school districts. Survey responses may increase understanding of the school nurse role in Oregon, and inform efforts to improve school nursing services, student wellbeing and academic success.

School nurse roles and responsibilities

Nurses in Oregon schools reduce health-related barriers to education. They support students with special health care needs; train school staff on individual student care and school-wide health protocols; and work with school teams to promote wellness for school communities.

Task Force on School Nurses

Senate Bill 698 (2015) created the Task Force on School Nursing in response to continued concerns over the level of school nursing support provided to Oregon students. The Task Force is charged with providing recommendations for the future funding of health services in schools.

Centering Health and Well-being in Education

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) co-developed this resource to support schools and districts to develop and sustain health and well-being initiatives, leading to academic improvements. Districts, schools, healthcare partners, local public health, Tribes, and community based organizations can deepen collaboration through the development of systems and partnerships that center racial equity and support student physical, mental and behavioral health. Seven strategies are highlighted in the resource, as well as Oregon community & district partnership profiles outlining existing funding models that support blending and braiding resources.
