Pertussis
Washington state is experiencing a pertussis (whooping cough) epidemic in 2012. Numbers of cases have been much lower in Oregon. There is no change in recommendations, vaccination is still strongly recommended. Learn more.
In Oregon, as of May 21, there have been 248 cases in 2012, compared with 106 cases during the same time last year. The case age range is from 8 days to 58 years; median age is 8 years old. There have been 10 infants hospitalized; nine of them are 3 months old or younger.
Measles
There have been 34 cases of measles in the U.S. so far in 2012, as of May 12, reported by 8 states; 79 percent of the cases were unvaccinated or had undocumented vaccine status. Six patients have been hospitalized for measles in 2012; 70 patients were hospitalized in 2011. Last year Oregon had two measles cases in Hood River county and one in Multnomah county.
In 2012, there have already been three measles outbreaks in the U.S.: two imported from Ethiopia, one in Kansas and one in Central Indiana (associated with the Super Bowl); and one in L.A. County, CA imported from the UK. In 2011, there were 17 measles outbreaks in the U.S., which account for 50 percent of confirmed cases.
Mumps
So far in 2012, as of May 12, there have been 65 cases of mumps in the U.S., reported in 24 states. Oregon had four cases of mumps in 2011, confirmed in Benton, Jackson, Linn and Multnomah counties. Nationally, in 2011, there were 370 cases reported by 40 states and D.C.
Type C Meningococcal
Prineville, Oregon recently had three cases of type C meningococcal disease within three months (Nov-Jan), which falls within the federal definition of an outbreak. Public Health officials have expanded the meningococcal immunization recommendations to ages 9 months through 25 years.
