Office of Disease Prevention and Epidemiology 

The Office of Disease Prevention and Epidemiology identifies, monitors and seeks to control the factors that threaten the health of Oregonians. 

Mission: Data for Public Health Policy
The Office of Disease Prevention and Epidemiology (ODPE) collects and analyzes data on health behaviors, diseases and injuries, disseminates findings, and designs and promotes evidence-based programs and policies to improve the health and safety of all Oregonians.

 Programs

The Acute and Communicable Disease Prevention program works with local health departments, other states and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent and control communicable diseases and outbreaks of acute diseases in Oregon.
The Oregon Alliance Working for Antibiotic Resistance Education (AWARE) is a statewide coalition that promotes the appropriate use of antibiotics.
The Center for Health Statistics is Oregon's Vital Records Office. Each birth, marriage, divorce, and death that occurs in Oregon is registered and filed with our office.
A project to convert major labs and health departments to electronic data interchange. The Public Health Division functions as an electronic hub to accept, route, and process electronic HL7 messages containing lab and clinical data.
This program studies diseases of current public health concern as well as newly emerging infections. These data provide a starting point for studying risk factors and developing better strategies of prevention and control.
The Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention section monitors the occurrence of chronic diseases, deaths, health behaviors, and community conditions that support healthy lifestyles.
The Health Statistics program is responsible for compiling and analyzing the data from vital records. These data are used throughout the state and nation for program planning and policy development.
Working towards a heart-healthy and stroke-free Oregon. We focus on developing partnerships and advancing policy to strengthen capacity, evaluate impact and take actions for a heart-healthy and stroke-free Oregon.
The HIV Case Management program's vision is to create a program that provides high quality, cost effective services that promote access to and ongoing success in HIV treatment for people with HIV/AIDS in Oregon.
We focus prevention services based on: making HIV testing a routine part of medical care; implementing new models for diagnosing HIV infections outside medical settings; preventing new infections; and further decreasing perinatal HIV transmission.
The mission of the HIV Program is to reduce the spread of HIV and promote the health of HIV-infected Oregonians. The HIV Surveillance - Data and Analysis - Section reports and records cases and incidence rates of HIV/AIDS for the state.

The Injury and Violence Prevention Program focuses on the identification and prevention of morbidity and mortality due to injury among Oregonians.
The Injury Epidemiology Program examines various data sources to describe injury problems among Oregonians, identify prevention strategies, and evaluate program effectiveness.
Living Well with Chronic Conditions (the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, or CDSMP) is a six-week workshop that provides tools for living a healthy life with chronic health conditions, including diabetes, arthritis, asthma and heart disease.
NEDSS is the surveillance portion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Public Health Information Network (PHIN). Our mission is to better manage and enhance public health surveillance through electronic data exchange.
The goal of the Arthritis Program is to reduce the impact of arthritis in Oregon through a public health approach, working in collaboration with partners in the public and private sectors.
The Oregon Asthma Program's vision is to improve the quality of life for Oregonians with asthma so that all people in Oregon live, work, play, and learn in communities that support health and optimal quality of life.
The Oregon Parnership for Cancer Control (OPCC) formed to develop and implement Oregon's Cancer Plan. We are a vibrant partnership organization providing many opportunities to get involved.
The Oregon Diabetes Program goal is to reduce the burden of diabetes in Oregon.
The NVDRS will collect information from many data sources and compile incident-based cases for all violent deaths in Oregon in order to generate public health information on violent deaths and to develop violence prevention strategies.
In August 1995, the Oregon Legislature unanimously passed legislation making cancer a reportable disease and established the Oregon State Cancer Registry (OSCaR) which began collecting information on all cancers diagnosed in Oregon as of January 1, 1996
The Physical Activity & Nutrition Program works with partners in the community to promote daily physical activity and healthy eating through implementation of Oregon's Statewide Physical Activity and Public Health Nutrition Plans.
This new program called the Oregon Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) will help health care providers and pharmacists provide patients better care in managing their prescriptions.
We provide ongoing evaluation support to county and state programs, initiate and conduct applied research studies, and contract with organizations across the country to improve community health, shape public policy, and reduce health disparities.
Uniting public and private organizations including emergency responders, law enforcement, health and safety professionals as well as interested citizens to reduce unintentional preventable injury and death in Oregon's children ages 0 - 14.
The Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) program prevents and controls infections with a primary focus on identification and treatment through screening and referral of exposed sex partners for evaluation and treatment.
Oregon's Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (TPEP) was launched in 1997 with a clear and simple mandate — to reduce tobacco-related illness and death.
To control the spread of TB in Oregon, the TB Program works to: identify and treat TB disease; identify, evaluate, and treat newly infected contacts to infectious TB cases; and screen high-risk populations for TB infection.
Our office is responsible for registering, certifying, amending, and issuing Oregon vital records. Oregon law requires that all vital events such as births, marriages, divorces, and deaths be recorded and registered.
A public-private partnership that aspires to reach Oregonians with workplace policies and programs that support employees to eat healthier, move more, quit tobacco, and use the kinds of health care that will improve and sustain their health
Oregon has developed a plan for communities to use to reduce youth suicide. The strategies require a commitment to partnership and shared responsibility among state agencies, between state and local governments, and between public and private sectors.
