Register Vital Records

The registration of vital events in Oregon, namely the recording of the facts associated with live births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, divorces and related occurrences, is a key public health function within Oregon’s Center for Health Statistics. 

Registration means the process by which vital records are completed, filed and incorporated into the official records of the Center for Health Statistics.

New Laws In Effect

On June 13, 2013, Governor Kitzhaber signed House Bill 2093, which reorganizes and clarifies our vital records laws. You may read the full text of the bill at the Oregon Legislature website. You may also review the newly amended PDFOregon Administrative Rules effective January 1, 2014.

Effective in 2012, House Bill 3611 requires the collection of combat status and location of combat on veterans' death records. Visit our death registration page for more information, instructions, and training.


Also effective in 2012, House Bill 2380 pertains to births and fetal deaths where mothers delivered in a hospital after initially planning to deliver at home or in a freestanding birth center. Our birth registration and fetal death registration pages provide training and instructions.
