Revisions to the BMI Data

Oregon Healthy Teens

Revisions to the BMI Data

The Body Mass Index (BMI) numbers were re-calculated for 2001 and 2002 Oregon Healthy Teens data because we mistakenly included records for which gender or age information was missing. These records must be excluded for the BMI calculation, which is based on age and gender as well as height and weight.

In addition, we recalculated the grouping of BMI scores based on updated reference criteria from the CDC, regarding appropriate cut-off points for categories of 'at risk for overweight' and 'overweight.' These are based on growth charts published as part of the 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (5th edition) by the USDA, in May 27, 2000, and have been used in the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey reporting since 2001.
