Hazardous Substances Incident Surveillance program reviewed hazardous substances 2010 incident data. The following are the top ten most frequently spilled or released chemicals in Oregon (in descending order).

1. Sodium Hydroxide

  • Most spills and releases occurred in warehouses or during transport

  • 71% of the incidents were due to human error

  • 445 facilities use, store, and transport sodium hydroxide in Oregon*

2. Ammonia

  • Most spills and releases occurred in manufacturing
  • 73% of the incidents were due to equipment failure
  • 268 facilities use, store, and transport ammonia in Oregon*

3. Hydrogen Chloride

  • 281 facilities use, store and/or transport hydrogen chloride in Oregon*

4. Mineral Oil with PCBs

5. Sulfuric Acid

  • 265 facilities use, store and/or transport sulfuric acid in Oregon*

6. Mercury

7. Molten Sulfur

  • 624 facilities use, store, and/or transport molten sulfur in Oregon*

8. Hydrogen Peroxide

  • 115 facilities use, store, and/or transport hydrogen peroxide in Oregon*

9. Potassium Hydroxide

  • 78 facilities use, store and/or transport potassium hydroxide in Oregon*
