How to Order
Check the Other box under CULTURE (for a primary specimen) or ISOLATE IDENTIFICATION (for identification of cultures or isolates), on the General Microbiology Request Form (form 60). Write in C. diphtheriae as suspect organism.
Notify the OSPHL General Microbiology Section before sending at 503-693-4100.

Specimen Collection Details

Collection
Actively growing isolated organism, in pure culture, on an agar slant or plate media, or appropriately collected cotton- or polyester-tipped  swab specimen in appropriate transport media (e.g. Amies transport media) from nasopharynx (respiratory diphtheria) or cutaneous wound (wound diphtheria).

Handling
Seal tube or plate and place isolate or swab transport media into biohazard bag. Refrigerate or hold at room temperature. Do not freeze.
Transport
Transport at room temperatures or refrigerated temperatures to be delivered to the OSPHL within 24 hours of specimen collection.
